Department of Psychology named one of top psychology programs in U.S. and world
The Ohio State University Department of Psychology has been named one of the top psychology programs nationally and worldwide.
The 2025 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Global Academic Subjects (GRAS) now ranks the department third among public psychology programs in the U.S., seventh among psychology programs in the U.S. and eighth among psychology programs around the globe.
Released in mid-November by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the report evaluates universities across 57 subject areas in engineering, natural sciences, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. Ohio State is included among 2,000 universities from 92 countries and regions.
“Rankings like the GRAS help to convey the quality of the work being done at Ohio State,” said Duane Wegener, chair of the department.
“We are excited to welcome many additional strong faculty this fall, and we expect the external recognitions to continue.”
The Ohio State School of Communication, Department of Political Science and other university programs in the social and behavioral sciences also placed highly in this year’s rankings.
Published annually since 2009, the GRAS identifies as “one of the world’s most comprehensive and objective assessments of universities by academic discipline.” It uses numeric data to rank program faculty, research and international collaboration across multiple categories.
For example, to evaluate a program’s “World-Class Faculty,” the GRAS tallies highly cited researchers and faculty who have received significant awards, among other indicators. The “World-Class Output” category looks at factors such as the number of papers published in top journals and conferences.
The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is distinct from the U.S. News & World Report annual rankings, which incorporate both objective and more subjective data, including peer surveys.
ShanghaiRanking Consultancy is an independent organization specializing in research on higher education. In addition to the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, it publishes the annual Academic Ranking of World Universities.
