Hundreds of fans of the world-famous Brutus Buckeye helped mark the mascot’s 60th birthday by setting a world record.
Nearly 2,000 students, faculty, staff and supporters filled the Tom W. Davis Gym at The Ohio State University on Wednesday night to attempt the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing conical party hats. The record of 1,161 was set by Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls in the United Kingdom in 2019.
Guinness World Record Adjudicator Chloe McCarthy and Matt Couch, Ohio State’s associate dean of students in the Office of Student Life, helped organize the crowd before the official count began. Participants needed to wear Brutus-themed party hats, with the elastic string firmly under the chin, for one minute to secure the record.
And secure it they did. The official count of 1,924 was more than enough to shatter the record.
