How does the brain connect experiences that happen close together in time, while keeping unrelated memories separate? In my lab, we investigate how memories are formed, linked, and updated as we move through the world. I will introduce the brain cells and structures that make memory possible, including neurons, synapses, and the tree-like dendrites that receive and organize information. I will also describe how we use behavioral experiments, miniature microscopes, and advanced imaging techniques to watch memory-related changes in the brains of mice. Together, these approaches allow us to ask exciting questions about where memories are stored, how one experience influences the next, and why memory organization can become disrupted during aging. Along the way, I will share what a career in neuroscience research looks like and how undergraduate students can become involved in scientific discovery.
