Join the Developmental Psychology area for a talk by Dr. Rebecca Schwarzlose (Washington University in Saint Louis)!

Title: Sensory circuit function and emerging psychiatric risk in childhood

Abstract: This talk will introduce a framework for how early sensory gating deficits may promote cascading neurodevelopmental effects that result in sensory over-responsivity, autism, and anxiety. Findings from functional MRI and symptom analyses that span the neonatal period to adolescence will be considered in the context of known circuit-level neurodevelopmental milestones drawn from work in model systems.

About Rebecca Schwarzlose: Becca Schwarzlose is a developmental cognitive neuroscientist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Washington University School of Medicine. She received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from MIT and conducted postdoctoral research at UCLA and WashU before joining as faculty. She also served as Chief Editor of the Cell Press journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences and wrote a popular neuroscience book called Brainscapes. Her research focuses on understanding the neural bases of atypical sensory responsivity and its role in autism and anxiety disorders.

The Developmental Seminar Series area features both internal and external speakers who are experts in a wide range of topics including the development of cognition, perception, learning, emotional processing, and social relationships.
